Valerian (valeriana officinalis) is a herb used as a traditional remedy for anxiety and insomnia. It is currently marketed as a natural sleeping aid.

Valerian has sedative, hypnotic  and sleep enhaning properties. It’s effect is on sleep latency, ie. time to fall asleep. Studies found that valerian reduced sleep latency in participants who had reported a longer time to fall asleep and who considered themselves poor sleepers.

If you have trouble sleeping, try drinking valerian root tea an hour before bedtime.
