What is Horse Chestnut?

Horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) is a tree native to the countries in the Balkan peninsula. For centuries, various parts (bark, flower and seed) of the this tree have been used in traditional medicine.

The fruit of horse chestnut tree contains a brown seed which looks like chestnut. Unlike sweet chestnut, horse chestnut is not edible. Raw horse chestnut seeds, bark, leaves and flowers are poisonous. After they have been processed and their toxins removed, they are safe to be used.
