Oolong Tea and Weight Loss

All teas are made from the same tea plant, Camellia Sinensis. The difference lies in their production methods.

Oolong tea (Wu Long Tea) is semi fermented tea. It comes somewhere in between green tea (unfermented) and black tea (fully fermented).

The production of Oolong tea is a complex process that requires great skill from tea masters. They have to know when to stop fermentation of tea leaves. The various Oolong tea varieties are due to different ranges of fermentation. Wuyi Cliff Oolong tea is one of the best and most expensive Oolong tea. How does Oolong tea aid weight loss?

Polyphenols in Oolong tea have been shown promote weight loss by:

In a study conducted by Aichi Medical University Institute and Nagoya City University in 2001 on 12 men and women to examine the effect of oolong tea on their health, 9 subjects reduced their waistline by 2cm and 8 subjects reduced their upper arms by 2cm. It is found that the polyphenols in Oolong tea activate lipase, the enzyme that dissolves body fat.

They remove and minimise damage by free radicals in the body. Free radicals are unstable particles that damage cells. They are caused by lifestyle or environmental factors such as excessive stress, poor diet, smoking, pollution, chemicals in food, pesticides, too much exercise and radiation.

The body has enzymes to control certain amounts of free radicals. If the latter become excessive, they can cause damage to the body. This is why we need antioxidants like polyphenols to enhance the enzyme function and neutralise free radicals.
