On Dr Oz show, Dr Mark Hyman joined Dr Oz to talk about his functional approach to treating diabesity.

According to Dr Hyman, most doctors treat obesity and diabetes as two diseases. In fact, they are so interconnnected that it’s really one disease known as diabesity (obesity + diabetes).

Causes of Diabesity
The causes of diabesity are diet, lifestyle and environmental toxins. Poor diet and lifestyle habits lead to insulin resistance, a condition where there is too much insulin secreted in the body and yet, cells become unresponsive to it. Insulin resistance can lead to premature ageing and diseases such as cancer, stroke, heart disease and dementia.

Insulin is a fat storage hormone. High insulin levels cause belly fat and inflammation. The good news is that insulin resistance is reversible by making changes to your diet and lifestyle.

How to Treat Diabesity
Most doctors only treat the symptoms of diabesity such as high blood sugar, high blood pressure or high cholesterol. Dr Hyman points out that inflammation is often the cause of obesity and diabetes. So treatment of diabesity involves treating the causes of inflammation.

1. Avoid or limit your intake of sugar and white flour.
2. Food sensitivities like dairy, gluten, corn, eggs and soy can cause inflammation. Here’s how to find out if you are sensitive to any of these foods. Eliminate ALL of them from your diet for 2 weeks. Then add them, one at a time, a couple days apart. If you gain weight and feel bloated the day after, you are likely to be sensitive to the particular food.
3. PGX fiber supplement – PGX is made from glucomannan, a dietary fiber derived from the root of konjac or elephant yam. It can absorb up to many times its weight in water to form a viscous gel. It reduces the absorption of fat and sugar in the gut, prevents insulin spikes, increases satiety and curbs cravings – all of which help to fight diabesity.

Dr Oz said his wife takes PGX fiber supplement too. He recommends glucomannan (PGX) for weight loss and as a natural appetite suppressant.

PGX is available in softgels at eVitamins and Yes Wellness (Canada).
