What is Hypothyroidism?
Hypothyroidism is a condition whereby the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone.

The thyroid gland regulates metabolism (the rate your body burns calories), energy utilisation and body temperature. An underactive thryroid (hypothyroidism) slows everything down and can result in various symptoms (see below).

L-tyrosine is an amino acid that is essential for production of thyroid hormones in the body. If you have too little of L-tyrosine, your body may not be making enough thyroid hormones. So, taking L-tyrosine supplement may help to support the thyroid in people who have hypothyroidism.

On Dr Oz show, Byrce Wylde, alternative medicine expert, suggested L-tyrosine as a natural alternative for hypothyroidism. He recommended 1500 mg of L-tyrosine , taken twice a day on an empty stomach.

When not to take L-tyrosine?
– if you have high blood pressure
– if you suffer form migraine headaches
– if you have cancer

L-tyrosine may interfere with thyroid hormone medication.If you are taking prescribed thyroid hormone medication, you should never take L-tyrosine without consulting with you doctor.

L-tyrosine supplements may be too stimulating for some people, causing jittery and insomnia. Hence, you should start with a lower dosage. Be sure to read and  follow dosage instructions on the product label.
