Numerous human studies have shown the potential of green tea in weight control:

1. Green tea extract and its activity for the treatment of obesity

Moderately obese patients who received green tea extract experienced a 4.6% reduction in body weight and 4.5% reduction in waist circumference after 3 months. This may be due to increased thermogenesis and inhibition of digestive lipase enzymes (thereby reducing fat digestion).


2. Efficacy of a green tea extract rich in catechin polyphenols and caffeine in increasing 24-hour energy expenditure and fat oxidation in humans.

This study shows both catechin polyphenols and caffeine in green tea extract increased energy expenditure and fat burning in humans. When the subjects took a green tea extract containing 50mg caffeine and 90 mg epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) 3x/day, there was a 4% increase in 24-hour energy expenditure than with the placebo. However, there was no effect on energy expenditure after taking 50 mg caffeine 3x/day. The findings suggest that green tea extract may assist in wei ght control by boosting morphogenesis, fat burning or both.
