What is 5-HTP?
Our bodies produce 5-HTP from L-Trytophan, the amino acid from dietary protein. 5-HTP is a crucial nutrient for the body to produce serotonin, a neurotransmitter that regulates the brain activity. 5-HTP can be naturally produced from the seeds of Griffonia Simplicifolia, an African plant.

5-HTP has been used clinically for 30 years for its ability to increase serotonin production in the brain. Serotonin plays important functions in regulating appetite, mood, sleep and boosting weight loss. It can reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), insomnia, migraine and fibromyalgia.

5-HTP & Appetite Control
Low serotonin levels are associated with carb cravings and increased calorie intake. Studies have shown that supplementation with 5-HTP reduced carb (and calorie) intake, increased satiety and reduced body weight in obese/overweight participants.

In one study, participants given 5-HTP consumed less calories than those given placebo and lost more than 3 pounds in 5 weeks.

In another study of 25 overweight non-insulin dependent diabetic participants, those who received 5-HTP reduced their carb intake by 75% and lost 4.5 pounds in 2 weeks without intentional dieting.

Side Effects of 5-HTP
When taking 5-HTP, some people may experience slight nausea, which is only temporary. It is advisable to start with a low dose of 50 mg, 3 times a day and increase it gradually, if necessary.

Who Should Not Take 5-HTP?
– People who are being treated with either selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) or MAOI antidepressants
– Pregnant women
