Alpha lipoic acid (ALA)  is a natural and powerful antioxidant produced in the body.

ALA is more than an antioxidant and free radical scavenger. Studies have shown that alpha lipoic acid mimics the actions of insulin. ALA improves glucocose metabolism and insulin sensitivity. Hence, it is used to treat diabetes and diabetic neuropathy.

Alpha Lipoic Acid and Weight Loss

Alpha lipoic acid may promote weight loss by enhancing energy metabolism, regulating blood glucose, lowering triglyceride, improving insulin sensitivity. Consequently, it may also reduce the risk of obesity related diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.

In one study on 360 obese individuals, it was found that those who took 1800 mg ALA lost significantly more weight than those who took the placebo.

In another study on 1127 pre-obese and obese individuals, supplementing with 800 mg/day resulted in weight loss, and reductions in BMI, waistlines and blood pressure.

There are 2 types of ALA:

  • R-ALA: natural ALA
  • S- ALA: synthetic ALA

S-ALA is usually sold as a mixture of S-ALA and R-ALA. This is a poor quality and ineffective alpha lipoic acid supplement. So, don’t waste your money buying it.

You should always get pure R-ALA, as it is the most bioavailable and beneficial. R-ALA is more easily absorbed and utilised in the body.

My ALA doesn’t specify anything! So is it “R” or is it “S”? Mine is from Trader Joe’s… I will go find a brand that offers the “R” version… Maybe Mother’s Market or Sprouts Market will offer the “R” version…

Read the product label and make sure it contains R-ALA before buying.
